Your boarding pass, decoded

  1. Booking reference Six letters and numbers that open the whole booking: at the desk, in the app and in any claim.
  2. Flight number The airline’s two-character code plus up to four digits. Departure boards, apps and claims all use it.
  3. Gate Often printed later or shown as “see screens”. The boards in the terminal have the final word.
  4. Boarding time When boarding starts, not when the plane leaves. Gates close before departure, sometimes well before.
  5. Group or zone Your place in the boarding queue. Priority, families and assistance usually go first.
  6. Seat Row and letter. On most planes the A seat and the highest letter in the row are by the windows.

UK261: what a long delay can be worth

Flight distanceUp to
Up to 1,500 km£220
1,500 to 3,500 km£350
Over 3,500 km£520

When you arrive three hours or more late, or the flight is cancelled less than 14 days ahead, and the cause was the airline’s. It covers flights leaving the UK, and flights into the UK on a UK or EU airline. Bad weather and air-traffic-control strikes usually do not count.

Package holiday? Look for ATOL

  • A flight plus a hotel or car, bought together from a UK seller, is usually a package.
  • An ATOL certificate should arrive as soon as you pay: it names who protects you.
  • If the travel firm fails, ATOL gets you home or your money back.
  • A flight bought on its own, straight from the airline, is not ATOL protected.
